Since 2010, the Fraud and Cyber Crime Group of the Queensland Police Service has hosted Fraud Support and Recovery Group meetings in Brisbane, usually on the 2nd Sunday of each month. Group meetings are held in the Ground Floor conference rooms at Queensland Police Headquarters, 200 Roma Street, Brisbane – 2pm to 4pm.
The group assists victims of scams/fraud and helps them recover from what is not just a financial loss but often personal and emotional losses. Sometimes the burden is too much, but who can you turn too? This group encourages members to work through the feelings associated with being a victim of a crime and to become a survivor.
The Fraud Support and Recovery Group meets once a month, and is open to any victim of fraud, their friends and families. Members share their experiences in an effort to help others who have faced similar issues but have not yet found the path forward.
Unfortunately, it is difficult to have funds returned after an event of this type; however, with help victims can regain their voice through shared experiences with friends.
The next meeting of the Fraud Support and Recovery Group will look at “Tact before Text”. The Tact before Text project was created to educate and empower our more vulnerable community; seniors and international students, by providing cyber safety strategies and initiatives to safeguard them from becoming victims of cybercrime, as part of a grant provided by Suncorp and Queensland Police Service Safer Qld Community Grant.
The Tact before Text presentation covers areas that inform the dangers and risks of the use of the internet and social media, and practical information focusing on internet safety, and how to report.
The presentation encourages users to THINK, before TEXTING, before SENDING personal information, protecting their identity and managing their reputation online. Knowledge is power, so arm yourself to be the safest you can be.
